WOMEN

You Don't Have to Suffer in Silence

Hormones play a role in nearly every system of a woman’s body. They influence sleep, mood, metabolism, focus, and long-term health. When hormone levels first begin to shift, the changes are often subtle and easy to dismiss.
For years, many women have been told that the symptoms of perimenopause and menopause are simply something to endure. While menopause is inevitable, support and effective treatment are available.

For many women, hormonal changes start in the 30s, become more noticeable in the 40s, and intensify through the menopausal transition. Because these shifts happen gradually, symptoms are often normalized or overlooked.

Symptoms vary, but often include:

  • Hot flashes & night sweats
  • Mood swings & irritability
  • Anxiety & depression
  • Irregular periods
  • Brain fog & memory issues
  • Sleep disruptions
  • Weight gain & low libido
  • Joing pain, dry skin, frequent UTIs, and more

When these symptoms persist or begin to affect everyday life, it may be time to take a closer look at hormone health.

Hormonal Imbalances Impact Women in Many Different Ways

Hormones help regulate nearly every system in the body. Many women experience imbalances at any stage of life, often showing up as a wide range of symptoms that may feel disconnected at first.

Perimenopause

Perimenopause is the transition leading up to menopause, when the body begins preparing to stop having menstrual periods. While it can start at different ages for different women, many notice signs sometime in their 40s. This change is often marked by fluctuating estrogen levels that can affect cycles, sleep, mood, and overall well-being.
Common symptoms of perimenopause include:
  • Irregular or unpredictable periods
  • Hot flashes or night sweats
  • Sleep disruptions
  • Mood changes, irritability, anxiety, or low mood
  • Brain fog or difficulty concentrating
  • Vaginal dryness or urinary changes

Menopause

Menopause is a natural transition that occurs when you’ve gone 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period. It typically happens in the early 50s and reflects a long-term decline in estrogen and progesterone as the ovaries stop releasing eggs. While menopause itself is a single point in time, the hormonal changes surrounding it can continue to affect the body for years.
Common symptoms of menopause include:
  • Hot flashes and night sweats
  • Sleep disruption or insomnia
  • Mood changes, irritability, anxiety, or low mood
  • Vaginal dryness or discomfort with intimacy
  • Urinary urgency or recurrent UTIs
  • Changes in libido
  • Joint or muscle aches
  • Dry skin, hair thinning, or weight changes

Thyroid

The thyroid is a small gland in the neck that helps regulate metabolism, energy, temperature, and hormone balance. Conditions such as hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, and Hashimoto’s disease occur when the thyroid produces too much or too little hormone, or when the immune system interferes with normal thyroid function.
Common symptoms may include:
  • Fatigue
  • PMS
  • Hair loss
  • Low libido
  • Anxiety
  • Temperature intolerance
  • Brain fog
  • Irregular cycles
  • Acne
  • Insomnia
  • Weight changes

PCOS/Endometriosis

PCOS and endometriosis are hormonal conditions that can affect menstrual cycles, fertility, metabolism, and overall well-being. Symptoms often vary from person to person and may overlap with other hormonal changes, making these conditions easy to miss.
Common symptoms include:
  • Irregular periods or no periods
  • Painful Periods
  • Excessive hair growth
  • Weight gain
  • Acne

Symptoms of Low Testosterone

Reduced energy, reduced endurance, diminished work and/or physical performance, fatigue, depression, reduced motivation, poor concentration, impaired memory, irritability, infertility, reduced sex drive, reduced muscle bulk and strength and changes in erectile function. Physical symptoms may include change in body habitus (increase BMI or waist circumference, height loss), gynecomastia, changes in body hair patterns, gynecomastia, and testicular abnormalities in size.

Progression

Peak testosterone levels occur around age 30 years, after which gradual decline begins. Between ages 25-75, total testosterone decreased by approximately 25%. Rate of decline is increased in men with obesity and comorbid conditions.

Effects of Low Testosterone:

Physical Health – Low testosterone has significant adverse effects on bone health, cardiovascular function, and metabolic health in men. It is strongly linked to reduced bone mineral density and increased fracture risk. Low testosterone is associated with increased cardiovascular disease risk including elevated blood pressure, high cholesterol, cardiac arrhythmias, and atherosclerosis. It is also has profound effects on body composition, insulin sensitivity and risk for diabetes.

Sexual Health – Low testosterone profoundly affects sexual desire (libido), erectile function, spontaneous erections, and overall sexual activity, with reduced sexual desire being the most specific and consistent symptom of male hypogonadism.

Mental Health – The association between low testosterone and depression has been extensively studied and shows that men with low testosterone appear to have more depressive symptoms than those with normal testosterone levels. Low testosterone has also been associated with increased risk of cognitive impairment.
