Arthritis: A Common Condition You Can Manage

Arthritis Wellandco Story

Did you know that 1 in 5 adults in the United States live with arthritis? It’s not just a condition that comes with old age—arthritis can affect people of all backgrounds, and it’s currently one of the leading causes of disability in the country. But here’s the good news: with the right knowledge, tools, and support system, you can take charge of your joint health and lead a full, active life.

What Exactly Is Arthritis?

Arthritis isn’t just one disease. It’s actually an umbrella term for more than 100 different conditions that affect the joints and surrounding tissues. The most common forms include:

  • Osteoarthritis (OA) – Often called “wear-and-tear arthritis,” this form develops over time as cartilage in the joints breaks down. It’s most common in the knees, hips, hands, and spine.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) – A chronic autoimmune condition where the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy joint tissue, leading to inflammation and pain.
  • Gout – Caused by the buildup of uric acid crystals in the joints, often affecting the big toe.
  • Psoriatic arthritis – Linked with the skin condition psoriasis, this form causes joint inflammation and discomfort.

No matter the type, arthritis can result in pain, stiffness, swelling, and reduced mobility—all of which can impact your daily life.

Who’s at Risk for Arthritis?

Arthritis can affect anyone, but certain factors can raise your risk:

Lifestyle choices: Smoking, a sedentary lifestyle, and a poor diet can all contribute to joint inflammation and deterioration over time.

Age: The risk increases as you get older.

Gender: Women are more likely to develop most forms, especially osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Men, on the other hand, are more prone to gout.

Genetics: A family history of arthritis can make you more susceptible.

Weight: Carrying excess body weight puts additional strain on weight-bearing joints like the hips, knees, and lower back.

Injuries: Previous joint injuries from sports, accidents, or repetitive strain can lead to arthritis later in life.

Can You Prevent Arthritis?

While there’s no guaranteed way to prevent all forms of arthritis, you can absolutely take steps to lower your risk and slow its progression:

Don’t smoke – Smoking increases inflammation and can worsen some types of arthritis, particularly rheumatoid arthritis.

Maintain a healthy weight – Even modest weight loss can significantly reduce stress on your joints.

Exercise regularly – Low-impact activities like walking, swimming, and cycling help keep joints flexible and strengthen surrounding muscles.

Eat an anti-inflammatory diet – Focus on whole foods, especially those rich in omega-3 fatty acids (like salmon, flaxseeds, and walnuts), as well as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

Protect your joints – Use proper body mechanics during physical activities and be mindful of overuse.

Managing Arthritis: You Have Options

If you’re already experiencing joint pain, stiffness, or swelling, don’t ignore it. Early diagnosis and treatment can make a huge difference in managing arthritis and maintaining a high quality of life.

Here are common treatment paths:

  • Lifestyle changes: Healthy eating, exercise, and weight management
  • Physical therapy: To improve range of motion and strengthen joints
  • Medications: Anti-inflammatories, pain relievers, or disease-modifying drugs for autoimmune forms
  • Supplements: Such as glucosamine, chondroitin, or turmeric—though always consult your health care provider first
  • Injections: Corticosteroid or hyaluronic acid injections may provide temporary relief
  • Surgery: In severe cases, joint replacement surgery may be recommended

Everyone’s journey with arthritis is different, which is why personalized care matters.
