MEN

Symptoms of Low Testosterone

Low testosterone can affect nearly every system in the body, often in ways that develop gradually over time. Because these changes are subtle at first, many men dismiss them or attribute them to lifestyle or age.

You may notice reduced energy and endurance, along with diminished work or physical performance. Mental effects are also common, including poor concentration, impaired memory, irritability, and reduced motivation. Some men experience depression or a general decline in mood.

Sexual health changes are another key indicator. Reduced sex drive, changes in erectile function, and infertility are frequently associated with low testosterone levels.

Physical changes may also occur.

These can include increased body fat, particularly around the waist, reduced muscle bulk and strength, and changes in overall body composition. In some cases, men may notice height loss over time, gynecomastia, changes in body hair patterns, or testicular changes in size.

Understanding Testosterone Decline

Testosterone levels typically peak around age 30 and gradually decline over time. Between the ages of 25 and 75, total testosterone levels may decrease by approximately 25 percent.

This decline does not occur at the same rate for every man. Those with obesity or underlying health conditions often experience a more rapid decrease. Because this progression is gradual, symptoms can go unrecognized for years, even as they begin to affect daily life and long-term health.

Effects of Low Testosterone

Physical Health

Low testosterone has significant effects on bone, cardiovascular, and metabolic health. It is strongly associated with reduced bone mineral density, increasing fracture risk over time.

It is also linked to higher cardiovascular risk, including elevated blood pressure, high cholesterol, cardiac arrhythmias, and atherosclerosis.

Sexual Health

Low testosterone profoundly affects sexual desire (libido), erectile function, spontaneous erections, and overall sexual activity, with reduced sexual desire being the most specific and consistent symptom of male hypogonadism

Mental Health

The association between low testosterone and depression has been extensively studied and shows that men with low testosterone appear to have more depressive symptoms than those with normal testosterone levels. Low testosterone has also been associated with increased risk of cognitive impairment.
